چکیده

We propose a new lightpath routing algorithm for WDM optical networks that solves the routing and wavelength assignment (commonly known as RWA) problem dynamically and separately. The RWA problem is partitioned into two subproblems, the routing and wavelength assignment problems, and both of them are solved using the shortest path routing technique. For solving the routing subproblem, an auxiliary graph is created whereby the nodes and links in the original network are transformed to the edges and vertices, respectively, and the availability of each wavelength on the input and output links of a node as well as the number of available wavelength converters are taken into account in determining the weights of edges. Furthermore, for solving the wavelength assignment subproblem, an auxiliary graph is also utilized and the cost for wavelength conversion is taken into consideration in the edge weight function. Simulation results show that our algorithm performs much better than previously proposed algorithms in terms of blocking probability, especially if the number of wavelengths is large while the number of converters at each node is limited.

Ip over Wavelength-routed Access Networks

Wavelength-routed networks exploit the tremendous bandwidth of optical fibers and allow for optical routing of packets thus making end-to-end delay much lower. In this paper we discuss some of the protocol issues that have to be dealt with such that Internet applications can smoothly run over wavelength-routed access networks. Topics addressed include routing and lightpath assignment, latency r...

New Approach for Minimizing Wavelength Fragmentation in Wavelength-Routed WDM Networks

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is the dominant transport technology used in numerous high capacity backbone networks, based on optical infrastructures. Given the importance of costs (CapEx and OpEx) associated to these networks, resource management is becoming increasingly important, especially how the optical circuits, called “lightpaths”, are routed throughout the network. This requir...

Iterative Linear Programming Formulation for Routing and Wavelength Assignment in Optical Networks

In this paper, we consider the Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) problem in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks. Firstly, we propose separate linear programming (LP) formulations for the lightpath routing and the wavelength assignment subproblems. Then, an iterative algorithm that integrates both formulations is also proposed for solving the complete RWA problem. The objective...

BER-Based Call Admission In Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks

In a wavelength-routed optical network, while establishing a lightpath to admit a call, the negative eeect of transmission impairments, e.g., crosstalk in switches and ASE noise in EDFAs, is incorporated by performing an on-line BER calculation.

Dynamic Routing and Wavelength Assignment with Backward Reservation in Wavelength-routed Multifiber WDM Networks

In wavelength-routed WDM networks, blocking probability of lightpath establishments is generally high due to coarse granularity and wavelength continuity constraint. Therefore, blocking of lightpath establishments is one of crucial issues which must be resolved. Multifiber environments reduce blocking probability of lightpath establishments because each link consists of multiple fibers and mult...

Impact of Transmission Impairments on the Teletraffic Performance of Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks

In a wavelength-routed optical network, a transmitted signal remains in the optical domain over the entire route (lightpath) assigned to it between its source and destination nodes. The optical signal may have to traverse a number of crossconnect switches (XCS’s), fiber segments, and optical amplifiers, e.g., erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA’s). Thus, while propagating through the network, t...
